Why Practise Chair Yoga

Why practise chair yoga

Chair yoga is for everyone who wants to give it a go!

Chair yoga can provide all the benefits of a regular mat-based yoga class without practising extreme and unsustainable versions of postures. Just like my mat based/standing slow mindful yoga classes, my chair yoga classes focus on sustainable versions of postures and exploring ways in which we can continue to move safely.

This is not fitness based chair yoga, though you will (of course) experience gentle stretching. Rather the combination of the breath and the movement together provide a sense of wellbeing in the nervous system. Working with the breath in this way helps regulate the nervous system and meditative practices can help further enhance and catalyse this effect.

Slow, mindful chair yoga focuses on supporting health conditions such as chronic pain, arthritis and lower back pain.

Chair yoga can assist senior adults (but of course some prefer mat-based classes). The key factor that might help you decide whether mat-based or chair-based yoga is for you is whether you are happy moving up and down from a yoga mat but you could also consider your existing range of movement and overall mobility.

Chair yoga can also help those with low energy and fatigue, wheelchair users and in an office situation where participants may need to practise wearing their regular street clothing.
